We're home: final results

A final post from me as I realise that a combination of the exhaustion that set in after we crossed the line and dead phone batteries (not to mention the calling of the bar...) meant that the final results from the cycling leg were never posted... so you know the result, but not the conclusion of our ongoing battle with Accenture on the bike!

I could write the same summary for the bike as for the run to be honest - the Credit Suisse team performed admirably throughout the cycling legs. The conditions were tough - wet roads and rain for the first few legs and strong winds, both head and cross, throughout all legs, but every rider did a fantastic time. And the logistics didn't let us down - our support crew was as slick as if they'd been doing it for years... enthusiastic, professional and committed, they never let us down - whether in the bike changeovers, the directions over the radio, or playing each of us "Eye of the Tiger"as we neared the end of our legs. Superb - thank you guys.

To cut to the chase, Massimo managed to stay in contention with his counterpart from Accenture on leg 5, rising to the occasion after each made repeated attempts to break away, leaving me 50 seconds back from Accenture at the start of leg 6. And it was great having someone to chase - particularly as Accenture had made the same decision as us and put their lady on the final leg. It was a tough, windy ride on cold, tired legs... (i.e. it hurt!) But I caught her just before the first hill and didn't look back. The result: Credit Suisse won both the bike and the run in 2011 - a fantastic achievement, and it's just a shame that we weren't able to complete the swim to see if we could have made the hat-trick.

Cycle times: 1. Credit Suisse 8:38:30 2. Accenture 8:49:20 3. Barcap 9:24:45 4. UBS 9:53:10 5. Virtualis 11:32:00

Special mention should go to Virtualis for a superb effort on the bike - having been one man down for the run and the swim (and hence each competitor having to do more than one person's worth of each leg), they were 2 men down on the bike and two of their riders therefore rode two legs.

Overall times (swim is excluded due to the fact it had to be aborted 7.5 hrs in due to worsening sea conditions) 1. Credit Suisse 17:53:00 2. Accenture 19:11:30 3. Barcap 20:00:05 4. UBS 20:31:40 5. Virtualis 21:48:10

Congratulations to all teams, Credit Suisse in particular, for a fantastic race, great competition and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Full 2011 results will be on the website in due course.

Until next year, Helen.

Coming to the last leg...

A nail biting penultimate leg with Massimo battling it out with Accenture who are currently 200 meters ahead.

The last 30 minutes have seen the lead spot change between the two cyclists who are coming into the final few miles. At the moment, it's anyone's race...

Helen is ready and waiting to take up the final leg to take the team over the finish line.

Carlos in battle

A storming ride by Paul on the first leg. We caught UBS, who had a 15 min head start. And then Accenture on the finish line, making up 5 mins on them.

Carlos is now in close battle with Accentures's second man - each have overtaken twice... The race is on!

Wheels on tarmac

Our first rider, Paul, is now 35 mins into his ride and pedalling strongly. The teams started in reverse order based on the run times, 5 mins apart, so CS were off last and we are chasing hard...

It's Calais but not as we know it

So we're motoring into Calais but... Not as we hoped too. The pilots of the two teams that continued the battle with the increasingly large waves- Virtualus and CS- decided to pull us out for safety reasons.

7 hrs and 30 mins of swimming under our belts was a damn fine effort though... Noone was ahead of us!

Paul has a friend

He's in for his second leg &, with only two boats left on the high seas, it's good to have a friend in the water with you....a friendly seagull that is!

Just 15 mins of his leg to go; Josh is taking on the gel & getting the speedos on.

Massimo is still curled up in the corner after a little seasickness, Helen & Stuart are trying to catch some zzz's & Carlos is on deck- taking photos!!

Helen is in!

Swimming like there's a lamprey chasing her, she's going strong! Bilateral breathing all the way.

A couple of hellos!

Thank you to everyone for your comments.

Paul sends his love to the Brownie King & family. "Don't expect any texts", he says, whilst trying to hold in his recently consumed banana!

Carlos says "Cheers to the Climent family in Grenada. The water is certainly colder than down there and the sun is hiding (but it's not raining!)".

"Be nice to your Mummy & have a nice sleep" says Josh, through much less chattering teeth than before.

Carlos is now swimming

Suffering from the cold like Josh, Stuart finished his swim in style, dragged himself onto the boat and is now wrapped up in a sleeping bag with a hot water bottle.

Carlos has started strongly and we continue to make great progress.

The latest for the number nerds: the pilots are counting our strokes per minute:

Paul: 67 Josh: 70 Stuart: 46 Carlos: 62

We can see France

It's rather less visible than the white cliffs, but there none-the-less where it wasn't before.

It feels like we're making good progress. Hard to tell vs. other teams, but virtualis seem to have made similar progress, barcap just behind. Accenture had to restart due to an electrical problem on their boat, so hard to know their progress. They seemed fast off the start.

Water temperature for those who like the numbers: a balmy 17.3 degrees. Helen

And now over to Stuart

Our third swimmer is in, swimming with a nice smooth stroke.

Josh did a fantastic swim - looking strong all the way through. Only when he got out was it clear he'd felt the cold rather more than Paul. After 10mins, apparently he was already cold. Ugh. An even more amazing swim. The team have quickly gotten him changed - dressed in full ski wear, he's now happily (maybe?!) sipping hot chocolate. And the sun is trying to come out again.

Until the next update, Helen

Neck a neck

Josh is pumping those arms and keeping a steady pace and breathing...all good things when you're crossing the channel.

Helen is keeping the Sturgeron firm in business...seasickness tablets are disappearing into her somewhat green looking face.

Josh is now swimming!

Paul completed a strong first hour. His first thoughts: "it was great, a perfect swim. Not cold." Nutter.

Josh is now swimming and looking great. Sea conditions are distinctly rougher... Writing this is making me feel rather ill... It's a long way to France... Helen

Paul is swimming

And the race is on - the first swimmers from all five teams are now in the water. The sun is shining and Paul has made a strong start.

And we're off!

The boat is steaming round to the starting point, the team have all taken their sea sickness tablets and our first swimmer off, Paul, is slathering himself in vaseline, cleaning his goggles and preparing himself to jump into the (all-so-enticing) water.

Which I have to say, feels rather rough already and we're less than 100m from the sea wall...

It's gonna be great... Helen

The swim is on!

I wish I could post a photo... All teams are now waiting at the harbour to load the boats, a mixture of nerves, anticipation and fear palpable in the morning breeze - which thankfully has dropped over night.

Not wanting to jinx it, but conditions are currently better than we'd feared - it's not raining at last, there are no gale force winds and rumour has it the water is actually above zero! Long may it last...

Now we just want to get on the boat and get the next leg of the race started. More updates once we're afloat. Helen

Day 1 overall placings

The Credit Suisse team has done us proud - a flawless execution of our strategy for the run, despite the inclement weather, to come in first on the run with a lead of over an hour...

Our support crew has been outstanding: a special thank you to Becky Glover and John Darley (support cyclist extraordinaire!) who have now headed off for their own weekend challenges. Stuart Crabtree, Chris Dettmar, Gita Seymour, Jo Toner and Becky Johnson continue with the squad for the duration. They have all been outstanding and our success today owes a lot to all of them.

After the run, standings are: 1. Credit Suisse 9 hrs 14 mins 30s 2. Virtualis 10 hrs 16 mins 10s 3. Accenture 10 hrs 22 mins 10s 4. Barcap 10 hrs 35 mins 20s 5. UBS 10 hrs 38 mins 30s

Now all thoughts turn to the swim... The wind is looking rather on the strong side but thankfully blowing in the right direction, so we head out for the channel crossing at 8am. Wish us luck! I fear it's going to be rough... Helen

CS is across the line!

Day one is complete, in a stunning effort Credit Suisse finished the run in 9 hours and 14 minutes!

The big question is - how far behind are the other teams. Now it's time for a shower (after dessert).
